My wife and I were in the unenviable position of looking to buy a home in an area where we didn't have any friends or family with recent experience to recommend an agent. We conducted an online search by: 1) seeing what agents popped up on Zillow next to houses that met our filter criteria, 2) reading reviews of those agents on Zillow, 3) cross-referencing the top contenders on Zillow with any other information available online (which was minimal), and 4) contacting a few agents by email. Our responses ranged from nothing(!) to Tom's response, which was head-and-shoulders above the rest. He responded in detail to all our questions. We set up an in-person meeting with Tom, by the end of which we were fairly certain we would choose him as our buyer's agent. We liked that he is experienced in more than one aspect of the business, is licensed in both MD and PA, was very patient in answering our questions, and put us at ease. We recently closed on our new home and are very satisfied with the overall experience. Tom was responsive and helpful, but not pushy. (My wife has always feared agents who try to steer you into spending more so they can get a bigger commission. We *never* got the feeling that Tom was trying to do this!) Unforeseen challenges always crop up. In our case, for example, there was some slowness on the part of the sellers and a contractor conducting inspection tests over the holiday period. We found his experience, knowledge, and judgment valuable in navigating these challenges and successfully closing the deal on schedule.
