The Chrissie Barrick Team often gets asked what makes a particular city, suburb, or neighborhood stand out as a unique place to live. For many people, it's the local history of a community. No matter the diversity of a community, you share that community's history with your neighbors.
Gettysburg is filled with American history due to its important role in the Civil War, and the city where President Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg address. As you can imagine, the historic homes in Gettysburg have quite a story to tell. And the Dobbin House is one you shouldn't miss.
The Dobbin House, located 89 Steinwehr Avenue in Gettysburg, is the oldest building in Gettysburg. It was constructed in 1776 by Reverend Alexander Dobbin as a home for his family and seminary school. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Reverend Dobbin became a prominent citizen in Gettysburg. He was a respected pastor, educator and also served as a county administrator. He helped secure Gettysburg's spot as the Adams County seat, a role it still holds today. Through the years, the Dobbin House may have been a stop on the Underground Railroad and a temporary field hospital during the battle of Gettysburg, with part of the property overlooking the spot where President Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Address.
Free guided tours of the Dobbin House are offered on the weekends at 10:00 am. Tours meet at the country store and are on a first come basis, so space is limited. Learn what life was like for residents of the house in the 18th and 19th century and during the Civil War.
